Neil had always dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights
Neil’s Dream Trip
Neil had always dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights. Ten years ago, he had booked a trip with his Gran to see them, but sadly he was too unwell to travel at the time, and his Gran has since passed away. It was a dream he spoke about often and, after talking it through together, we decided it was time to make it a reality.
We explored a range of options with Neil and his Support Workers. Neil was particularly drawn to a cruise around Norway, as this would give him the opportunity to stop at several locations along the way without all the packing, unpacking, and changes of transport that would usually be involved. He also loved the idea that the Northern Lights are even more visible at sea, thanks to the lack of light pollution.
Neil’s Support Worker confirmed she was happy to accompany him, approval was given by his deputy for the cost of the trip, and it was finally booked. Neil chose additional excursions to see lynx and take a ride in a cable car, and he treated himself to some black-tie dinners onboard.
Then the planning really began.
Once the time of year and cruise were confirmed, we arranged neighbouring cabins for Neil and his Support Worker to ensure support was close at hand if needed. With Neil having cerebral palsy and epilepsy, and being prone to falls, travelling on a ship at sea in winter presented some challenges. His physiotherapist, Nicole, worked closely with him to improve his balance on unstable surfaces, and Neil even tried an anti-gravity treadmill to help build his “sea legs.” Staff also supported and encouraged him to walk regularly and work out in his home gym to improve his balance and mobility.
As the ship docked at a different port every couple of days over the 12-day trip, we carefully researched medical services in each location and created a detailed holiday support plan, including information on nearby doctors and hospitals. We also looked into healthcare cover abroad, including what was and wasn’t covered by the Global Health Insurance Card. Medication was ordered well in advance, with timings adjusted to account for changing time zones.
Further preparations included planning meals and excursions, including a cable car ride and a lynx-spotting trip, as Neil loves all things big cat–related. Norwegian kroner were ordered, and travel was arranged from Leeds to the port in Southampton. Neil went shopping for warm clothing in preparation for the anticipated icy weather. Suddenly, it all came together, and Neil was ready to set sail.
Despite facing stormy seas as Storm Babet hit just as they departed, and experiencing seasickness along the way, Neil remained determined. His resilience paid off; he had a fantastic time and, most importantly, achieved his long-held ambition of seeing the Northern Lights. A dream delayed for many years was finally realised, making this trip a truly unforgettable experience for Neil and his Case Manager.
