“This is a story about washing cars in my pyjamas” by Lucy*, age 12
During my time at college we had a cool tutor called Graham. He always tried to make our lessons, fun and interesting. We had many talks about many things and one that stuck in our minds, was Jane Tomlinson and what a remarkable person she was. I remember at lunch time, myself and my friends were talking about Jane and we were saying that we wish, we could do something to help in her charity. So we told Graham that we would like to do something so Graham said “what a brilliant idea, I’ll leave it to you”. So we were thinking about doing all sorts of things like baking, sponsor silence, but that would be impossible with us.
Then one of my friends said “what about washing cars”, and then one of my other friends said “what about doing it in our pyjamas”. It sounded a bit crazy, but we all agreed. Our next step took us to buying car shampoo, buckets and sponges, out of our own pockets, we were all excited. We decided to charge £3.00 a car. As more ideas went by we were all given our own job role, where one person could be the banker, keeping a check on how much money is being raised etc. In this charity event my job role was to be an Administrative Assistant, where in my job role I kept a check on how many letters, emails etc were being sent out, received, to different colleges and people “cool job”.
As more ideas went round we were also given a form, seeing how much money we could raise individually. Back at home myself and my mum were busy asking family and friends, neighbours, people at the dentist etc. They were all saying what a great thing that we were doing and what a brilliant woman Jane was and that they hope, we do well. Back at college when Graham and the other guys found out that I raised over £200, they all looked shocked and thought “how did she do that”.
On the day of our charity event we were all there, ready for business with buckets, sponges and cleaning cloths. As the day went on we were all busy, washing the Principal’s and tutors’ cars where they all told us “I haven’t seen it that clean for ages”. When we asked Graham if he would like his car washing, he told us “I’ll wait until the press comes”, but they didn’t come but we did have a surprise visitor Mike Tomlinson came and he asked us “would you wash my car and I will give you £10.00. We were nearly fighting saying “who’s going to wash it, who’s going to wash it”. So we tossed for it and me and one of my friends washed it. All together we raised over £2000 pounds, what a great day. It felt good to do something good for others.
